Thomas Jefferson took office in 1801 after the government moved to Washington. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 doubled the size of the country and Lewis and Clark crossed it between 1804 and 1806. The Embargo Act of 1807 shut down much of the shipping trade in the northern ports.
