Abraham Lincoln took office in 1861 and Andrew Johnson succeeded him in 1865. The Civil War ran from 1861 to 1865 and ended slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. The Homestead Act of 1862 opened western land to settlers and the first transcontinental railroad was joined in 1869.
