William Henry Harrison died a month into his term in 1841 and John Tyler served the rest, then James K. Polk from 1845 and Zachary Taylor from 1849. Texas was annexed in 1845 and the war with Mexico ran from 1846 to 1848. Gold was found in California in 1848. Famine in Ireland began a migration that reshaped the eastern cities.
